Colourscapes & Simplicity
Ever since the internet has existed there have been great websites, cutting-edge websites, and websites which...um, fail miserably. Why is there such a divide. In short, opinion and taste: two things which there is a lot of in anything design-related.
The problem is, sometimes people get confused between taste and fact. And the fact is that bad web-design is bad web-design. It’s not bad because a lot of people say so, it’s bad because it breaks all the rules of colour and simplicity.
I suppose the problem is that we all want our website to stand out from the rest. You can go about this in many different ways, and one of the most is having an original layout that readers won’t have seen before.
Just don’t get that confused with something which they haven’t seen before because it’s...how can I put this kindly...oh, I can’t. Yes, because it’d TERRIBLE.
So, if in doubt, keep it simple. The best sites are those which are easy to navigate, fun to look at, and easy to take in. Yes, your site may look cool and quirky with a weird font you made up at 3am in the morning when you had a mad brain-wave, but will it aid ease of use? If it won’t then cut it. Readers want original, but they don’t want their brains to pay the price.
Also avoid dodgy advertising for Free Antivirus software. It may bring in revenue, but do you really want to alienate your readers by doing so?
