Importance of Captions and Titles in Web Design
If you’re like most of the webmasters who own a website that gets numerous hits daily but still face a quick turn-away by the users, then it’s probably the time when you should consider revisiting the design of your site. Wait, before reaching a conclusion that your web design is not great or really great, it’s also the time to check out the textual elements of the design. These textual elements can facilitate a smoother navigation for the users and make them stay longer on your website.

Most websites on the Internet do not speak! They do not speak and that is why a great visual work is required in order to make users understand the real usage of everything on the website. Lack of visual aid to the users can be a potential reason why most users do not spend sufficient time on most of the websites. This visual aid can be provided by your website itself and it doesn’t require a lot of skill, creative work, or efforts. All it requires is a clear understanding of the flow of your website and how each screen and element fit together.
Following are the two textual components that help user navigate through the website:
Captions
Captions are particularly useful for the images and the areas of graphical elements that are interactive. You can write captions suggesting the need and usage of particular graphical elements on the screen. For example, in a Web-based time management software, you can provide a caption below the calendar about the format you want the users to make their time entries.
Help text
Help text can take one of the several forms. It can appear in form of tooltips, alt text, foot notes or just as plain labels. This can guide the users about what to expect when they click or double-click a particular control on the UI.
